What is a Birth Doula:

  • A birth doula is someone who mothers a mother by providing physical, emotional and informational support during pregnancy and labor.
  • Recent studies have shown that when a birth is attended by a doula, a mother's labor is shorter, has less medical interventions, and has a smaller incidence of complications.
  • Mothers with a doula have babies that are healthier and are more at ease when taking to the breast for feeding.
  • A birth doula has an extensive knowledge of the physiology of birth and pregnancy and recognizes the emotional needs of a mother in labor.

What a Birth Doula does:

  • Honors the importance of the baby's birth as an experience that will always be remembered
  • Assists the mother in preparing her vision for her baby's birth and facilitates the follow through of that vision once labor has begun
  • Stays by the mother's side providing physical and emotional comfort throughout the entire labor
  • Assists the mother in making informed decisions before and during labor
